Walnuts: The oldest tree food known to Man

Did you know that walnuts have been enjoyed for centuries? They have a rich history, dating all the way back to 7000 B.C in Ancient Persia. These delicious nuts were brought to California in the late 1700s and now, California's Central Valley is responsible for over 99% of U.S. walnut production.

The walnut tree is a majestic deciduous tree that belongs to the Juglandaceae family. It can grow up to an impressive height of 80 feet, but it will not bear fruit until it reaches 7 to 10 years of age.

Interestingly, while we commonly refer to them as nuts, walnuts are actually a type of drupe, similar to almonds. The green fleshy skin is removed revealing a hard inner shell that contains an edible kernel nestled inside. Without a proper tool that hard inner shell is difficult to crack open so walnuts are usually sold without the shell.

Not only are walnuts delicious, but they are also packed with health benefits. They are a great source of antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, including alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), and they fight inflammation.

Walnuts taste great in salads, yogurt, and flatbreads - or just by themselves! You can add walnuts to practically any recipe for added nutrients. We sell premium, California-grown Chandler walnuts in 4 pound pantry bags and 25 pound bulk here on our website.
